French Connection is an international retailer and wholesaler of fashion clothing for men and women, accessories and home ware. Based in London, French Connection distributes its branded ladies and men’s wear through a network of company-owned stores in the United Kingdom, US and Canada. In major markets around the world as in Australia, Hong kong, China and India, one will find the its top-quality merchandise in franchised stores and through concessions in UK-based department stores and other multi-brand retailers. Founded in 1972, French Connection continues to grow and expand having been successful all these years in having their men’s and women’s clothing competing in the low and mid range fashion and price.
“FCUK” in Advertising
One of the more interesting highlights in French Connection’s history happened in 1997, when the company started to use “fcuk” as a brand in its advertising. While it created quite stir in several circles, it couldn’t be denied it created a lot of impact as well for French Connection. This was purportedly an acronym for French Connection United Kingdom, precipitated by faxes to and from the Hong kong offices that was usually headed with fchk to fcuk or vice versa. Pretty soon, fcuk was all over the place and young, fashionable people perceived themselves to be fascinating with t-shirts or other clothing that had something like “no fcukin’ worries” or “fcuk fashion”
In the US the fcuk brand also created some controversy to the point that the American Family Association urged a boycott of all fcuk products. The use of this acronym in advertising was ceased in 2005 along with the lowering of its profile in the stores. Today though, French connection continues to be known as fcuk such that the company fashion clothing still carries this brand.
